IF YOU RUN A BUSINESS IN CAMBRIDGE, THE TIP IS NOT AN OPTION

This catches people out constantly, so it is worth being blunt about.

“Business waste is not accepted. It is defined as waste arising from any trade, business, industrial or commercial activities.”

Cambridgeshire County Council

It does not matter that the laptops came from a small office, or that you would be taking them in your own car.

Even if it were allowed, the practicalities rule it out. Cambridgeshire County Council requires a booked time slot from every e-permit holder, and from every visitor at all at Thriplow and Bluntisham, and requires a free e-permit for any van, pick-up, campervan or minibus with the rear seats out, or any trailer over 1.5 metres. It refuses anything over 5.5 metres long or 2.3 metres high, and any driver-and-van service at any site. There is no version of a business IT clear-out that fits comfortably through that door.

Businesses have a separate duty of care for waste electricals under the WEEE Regulations, and you are required to be able to show where the equipment went. That is what we give you: a documented collection, certified data destruction, and a waste transfer record.

Anyone moving your waste commercially has to be a registered waste carrier. We are — registration CBDU607333, checkable on the Environment Agency public register, and listed on our certifications page.

BOOK A BUSINESS COLLECTION

AND IF YOU ARE CLEARING OUT AT HOME, HERE IS THE HONEST COMPARISON

You can take a computer to a Cambridgeshire County site. Here is where they are.

Milton Recycling Centre

Main site

Butt Lane, Milton, Cambridge CB24 6DQ

The nearest site to Cambridge, but it is being demolished and completely rebuilt. Cambridgeshire County Council has not confirmed the closure dates — check before you travel

Witchford Recycling Centre

Stirling Way, Witchford CB6 3FA

Daily 9am to 6pm, until 7pm on Wednesdays. Gates shut ten minutes before closing

Thriplow Recycling Centre

Gravel Pit Hill, Thriplow SG8 7HZ

Daily. 8am to 5pm April to September, 8am to 4pm October to March. Every visitor must book

Bluntisham Recycling Centre

Heath Road, Bluntisham PE28 3LQ

Daily. 8am to 5pm April to September, 8am to 4pm October to March. Every visitor must book

They will take it. But you will need a free e-permit for any van, pick-up, campervan or minibus with the rear seats out, or any trailer over 1.5 metres, a car, and a free hour in opening hours — and the machine is processed for its materials. Nobody uses it again.

We collect from your door for nothing, wipe the data to NIST 800-88 standard, and if the machine still has life in it we refurbish it and pass it on. If it is genuinely dead, we recycle it responsibly — and tell you that is what happened.
