How we count our impact
Every number on this site is on this page, with the working behind it. Where a figure is an estimate rather than a count, we say so.
We would rather publish a smaller number we can evidence than a larger one we cannot. If you want to check any of this, or you think we have it wrong, tell us.
A count of individual items logged into our system, plus a baseline of 479 recorded before the current system went live.
Estimated manufacturing emissions avoided by extending the life of each device rather than replacing it. Calculated per device by type, and including a baseline of 142 tonnes from the pre-migration period.
This is avoided embodied carbon, not measured emissions reduction. It assumes each device replaces a new purchase, which will not always be true.
A count of schools and charities that have received devices from us.
An estimate of 3 people per device placed.
An estimate derived from device counts, not a headcount of individuals. Always present it as an estimate.
The baseline
479 devices and 142 tonnes of avoided CO₂ were recorded before our current system went live. Those are carried forward as a fixed baseline and added to everything logged since, which is why the totals above start from a number rather than from zero.
Counters on this site read from the same source as this page. If a figure here disagrees with one elsewhere on the site, this page is correct and the other is a bug — please report it.
What we do not claim
- We do not claim measured emissions reductions. Our CO₂ figure is avoided embodied carbon — the manufacturing emissions of a replacement device that was not bought. It assumes each device we place substitutes a new purchase, which will not always be true.
- We do not count individual people. Our reach figure applies an estimate of 3 people per device placed. It is a modelled figure, not a headcount, and we label it as one everywhere it appears.
- We do not include devices we have not received. Pledged, promised and in-transit equipment is excluded until it is logged in.
