Where the computers actually go
Every machine we place lands somewhere specific — a classroom, a community centre, a kitchen table. The counters below read live from the same source as our methodology page. What we don’t do is dress them up.
THE NUMBERS
Three of those are counts. The fourth applies an estimate of 3 people per device placed — it is a modelled figure, not a headcount, and we label it as one everywhere it appears. The full working is here.
WHERE THEY GO
Across the UK, and growing
SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
Devices go to students without a machine at home. A refurbished laptop is the difference between doing coursework at a kitchen table and doing it on a phone.
CHARITIES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS
Organisations running job clubs, digital skills sessions and advice services, where the computer is the tool the service runs on rather than the service itself.
YOUNG PEOPLE
Weighted towards those out of education, employment or training, because applying for work without a computer is close to impossible.
The reach is UK-wide. We would rather tell you where we are than where we would like to be — and why young people specifically is worth two minutes if you want the reasoning.
WHAT WE DON’T CLAIM
- We don’t claim measured emissions reductions. The carbon figure is avoided embodied carbon — the manufacturing emissions of a replacement device that was not bought. It assumes each device we place substitutes a new purchase, which will not always be true.
- We don’t count individual people. The reach figure is modelled from devices placed, not counted from a register.
- We don’t include devices we haven’t received. Pledged, promised and in-transit equipment is excluded until it is logged in.
- We don’t publish work we can’t evidence. If a figure isn’t on this page, it’s because we can’t stand behind it yet — not because we’re being modest.
Counters on this page read from the same source as our methodology page. If a figure here disagrees with one elsewhere on the site, the methodology page is correct and the other is a bug — please tell us.
