It Feels Easy, But It's a Problem
We get it. The old PC is slow, the screen's dodgy, and you just want it gone. Chucking it in the bin feels like the simplest option. But here's why you shouldn't:
The Environmental Cost
Electronics contain lead, mercury and cadmium. In landfill those can leach into soil and groundwater, and lithium-ion batteries are a fire risk on top of that — which is why kerbside collections will not take them.
It Might Actually Be Illegal
Electrical waste is covered by the WEEE Regulations and is not meant to go in your general waste bin — that is why every council runs separate collection points for it. Businesses have a stricter duty of care again, and have to be able to show where their equipment went.
What To Do Instead
- Donate it to us. We pick it up for free, wipe your data, and give it a second life.
- Take it to a recycling centre. Most council tips have an electronics section.
- Don't just shove it in a drawer. It's not going to get any less old sitting there.
