Why You Shouldn't Just Bin Your Old Computer

Chucking your old PC in the bin isn't just wasteful — it's actually bad for the environment and potentially illegal. Here's why, and what to do instead.

It Feels Easy, But It's a Problem

We get it. The old PC is slow, the screen's dodgy, and you just want it gone. Chucking it in the bin feels like the simplest option. But here's why you shouldn't:

The Environmental Cost

Electronics contain nasty stuff — lead, mercury, cadmium. When they end up in landfill, those chemicals leach into the soil and groundwater. A single laptop battery can contaminate thousands of litres of water.

It Might Actually Be Illegal

In the UK, there are laws about how you dispose of electronic waste. Dumping it in household bins technically breaks WEEE regulations. Councils can fine you, and it's really not worth the hassle.

What To Do Instead

  • Donate it to us. We pick it up for free, wipe your data, and give it a second life.
  • Take it to a recycling centre. Most council tips have an electronics section.
  • Don't just shove it in a drawer. It's not going to get any less old sitting there.

The best option? Let us have it. We'll make sure it actually does some good.
