A Day in Our Workshop: What Really Happens to Your Donations

Ever wondered what goes on after you hand over your old laptop? Here's a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day in our refurbishment workshop.

BTS-019

Morning: The Van Arrives

Every day starts with our collection van pulling up, loaded with devices from yesterday's pickups. Laptops, PCs, tablets, monitors — all shapes, all sizes, all states of disrepair. They get unloaded, labelled, and logged into our tracking system.

First Stop: The Wipe Station

Before anyone even opens a device, it goes through secure data destruction. Our wiping rigs can process dozens of drives simultaneously — overwriting every sector with certified software. Drives that fail the wipe get pulled and physically shredded.

The Workbench

This is where the magic happens. Our team of technicians opens up each device, runs diagnostics, and figures out what it needs. Common fixes include:

  • Swapping a dead battery for a harvested one from another donated device
  • Cleaning out years of dust (you'd be amazed)
  • Upgrading RAM from parts harvested from beyond-repair machines
  • Installing a fresh, clean operating system

Afternoon: Ready to Ship

By the end of the day, a laptop that arrived looking like it belonged in a skip is now running smoothly, boxed up, and heading to a school or family who needs it. That's a good day.
