What Happens After You Donate
From your doorstep to a student's desk — here's the full journey your donated device takes.
Your Old Laptop's Second Life
You've filled in the form, packed the box, and dropped it off at the Post Office. But what actually happens next? Here's the full journey, step by step.
Step 1: It Arrives at Our Facility
Your parcel arrives at our processing hub in Leeds. Every device gets barcoded and logged into our system. You'll get an email confirming we've received it.
Step 2: Data Gets Wiped
Our technicians run a certified NIST 800-88 data destruction process. Every file, every photo, every saved password — completely overwritten. You get a destruction certificate emailed to you as proof.
Step 3: Assessment & Triage
Each device gets inspected and tested:
- Can it be refurbished? → It goes to the refurb bench.
- Does it need parts? → We source compatible components from other donations.
- Is it beyond repair? → It gets broken down for responsible recycling. Zero landfill.
Step 4: Refurbishment
Working devices get a fresh install of Windows or Linux, new thermal paste, a deep clean, and a full hardware test. They leave our bench looking and running like new.
Step 5: Matching
We match refurbished devices with schools, community groups, and families who've applied through our programme. Priority goes to students without access to a computer at home.
Step 6: Delivery
The device gets shipped to its new owner. A student opens a box and has a working laptop for the first time. That's the bit that makes it all worth it.
Step 7: Your Impact Report
You'll receive a carbon certificate showing the CO₂ you saved, plus an update on where your device ended up. Because your old laptop didn't just get recycled — it changed someone's life.
